The pigment that does the work
Anthocyanins are the blue-purple pigments in blueberries, blackberries and purple grapes. They cross the blood–brain barrier in small amounts and accumulate in the hippocampus, the region most involved in forming new memories. In animal work they increase signalling molecules linked to neuron growth; in people, the story is more modest but real.
The best-known human trials gave older adults with mild memory complaints roughly 500 ml of wild blueberry juice daily for 12 weeks. Word-list recall and paired-associate learning improved against placebo. Mood scores nudged upward too. These are small studies — but they point the same direction, which is rare in nutrition research.
Why we pair blueberry with walnut milk and rosemary
Anthocyanins are better absorbed alongside a small amount of fat, so our Cognitive Health recipe blends pressed blueberry with a splash of walnut milk. Rosemary contributes carnosic acid, which has its own line of neuroprotective research, and simply makes the drink taste less like dessert.
We use frozen wild blueberries year-round. Freezing does not meaningfully reduce anthocyanin content, and wild varieties carry roughly double the pigment of cultivated highbush berries.

- Aim for roughly a cup of berries a day; more is fine but the trials didn't need it
What juice will not do
No juice prevents or reverses dementia, and anyone with new or progressive memory loss needs a clinician first. Where blueberries help is at the margins: sharper recall on ordinary days, alongside sleep, movement and social contact — the things that carry most of the evidence.
A cup of wild blueberries a day with a little fat is a well-supported, low-risk habit for memory. It complements medical care; it never replaces it.
